The Woods is Shining this Morning!

We welcome Fall with open arms at The Leelanau School. We set new goals, seek adventure, try on new friendships, and bask in the colorful beauty of our surroundings. Just as poet Wendell Berry suggests in his poem "Grace," the forest is a singularly important character in our Leelanau story and our season of learning. The woods is shining around us, ready to play a role in our Leelanau education and experience. We, too, are prepared to shine as we "announce our place in the family of things."

The chemistry of a community is built over time, but it is quickened in this boarding school environment. Add a 2-person tent or a 13-passenger voyageur canoe trip to the formula, and you have instant heat and bonding. Our off-campus exploratory programs during the earliest days of the school year ensure we are all thinking about each other in addition to our personal journey. We return to the classrooms knowing more about each other than many students and teachers will learn in an entire school year. This is the foundation on which we build.

We welcome you to this 95th season of The Leelanau School. Please follow our e-newsletters to learn more about our challenges and celebrations. Watch us leap tall books and fallen logs in a single bound. Cheer on our students and faculty as they grow our global community of life-long learners.

Shine with us!

Warmly, Kate Olson

Fall Exploratory 2024

Students and faculty bonded over mental, physical, and weather challenges during our Fall Exploratory ventures. Courage, leadership, interconnectedness, and resilience are fundamental core values in our community, and we got real-life lessons within hours of arriving on campus! Bravi to all who survived the elements and adventures!

WE GOT SOOO CLOSE!

The Leelanau School received lots of love and positive attention as recent applicants for a transformational IMPACT100-TC grant to support our Auditorium Restoration. Unfortunately, the competition was fierce in the final stages of the review, and we narrowly missed out to three other worthy projects.

On the upside, the list of organizations interested in our vision of ashared community venue on The Leelanau School campus continues to grow. Expanding relationships with The Glen Arbor Players, the Glen Arbor Arts Center, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and other area schools, arts organizations, and businesses are central to Leelanau's new strategic plan and key to our future. Building community with our neighbors is a win-win!

We continue to seek grant, community, and individual support for our Auditorium revitalization project. We've done the leg work, hired superb consultants, and need $158,000 for Phase I of the project—the audio, visual, lighting, and electrical updates to the Auditorium.

Another $160,000 is required for our "beautification" Phase II—to update the worn seating, flooring, paint, and curtains and to provide improved accessibility to the Auditorium.

If you have fond memories of the Auditorium and want to help, please let us know! Special or additional gifts, large and small, will help us refurbish this historic gathering space. And with a leadership gift to the project, we would proudly add your name in lights!

To learn more about this project or to help us realize this dream, please contact me or Kate Olson at 231.334.5841 or kolson@leelanau.org.

With thanks,
