JUMPING IN Rob Hansen, Head of School People discover The Leelanau School at a critical time in their lives. During transition or reflection, current students and alumni speak to the important turning point marked by their time here - that moment they decided to jump into something new and begin a grand adventure. It takes courage to attend a boarding school. To leave one’s home to discover a second. To make friends from across the county. To live in a community with strangers who quickly become family. It works because, despite any initial trepidation, there is comfort in knowing that the Leelanau family cares, watches, and accepts all who jump in with their whole selves. There is the knowledge that the community of Leelanau extends far and wide, and each student is supported by not just those surrounding them but those who came before them. Turns out, the water IS easy to get used to and so much fun once you are knee-deep. To jump in means to be open to challenge: to accept the initial discomfort in favor of the permanent reward of learning, colored by lasting memories. Every day I witness students and staff jumping into challenges together, constantly emerging with a renewed discovery of their capacity to do great things. I hope your experience with Leelanau, whether as a student or parent, helps you jump into life’s opportunities, knowing that you have the capacity and support to succeed. Jump in with us. Stay connected and pledge your support. The water is fine and the adventure is lasting. |

NEW CAMPUS SPACES SHAPE CREATIVE LEARNING This week The Leelanau School announced plans for a new creative space on its Glen Arbor campus, expanding hands-on learning opportunities for students. The facility will house the school’s pottery workshop and kilns, woodworking, metals, welding tools, and a new Fusion Pro 48 CO2 - 48” x 36” - 80 Watt Laser Cutter/Engraver. The construction project and laser cutter are made possible through a generous gift from Charles E. Scripps, Jr. According to Head of School Rob Hansen, “we teach students how to learn at Leelanau, and there is no better way to think creatively than to do creatively. This new collaborative space will allow academic, arts, and residential faculty to expand curriculum and entrepreneurial opportunities for students. We can already see the wheels turning and sparks flying!” Architectural planning and excavation have begun, with completion targeted for Fall 2022. This project follows eighteen months of campus renovation to community spaces provided through charitable gifts from Doug and Dianne Cook of Chicago and Glen Arbor. “Exciting improvements to the Karman Activity Center, Dining Room, the Cook Learning Commons, and this new Creative Arts space are transforming our campus,” said Hansen. “The Leelanau School is approaching its second century with the same educational philosophy but a fresh look and feel. This exciting growth through philanthropic support energizes our mission and community, and we are truly grateful.” |

HISTORY, TREES, TEA, AND 88 KEYS: Senior Seminar 2022 |
|
|
A wide-ranging trio of topics edified an engaged audience in the hours leading up to spring break. In Leelanau School tradition, our Seniors selected a research topic, prepared a work product, presented their findings to their peers and teachers, and fielded questions from a curious crowd. This year's Senior Seminar topics included Ellie's Benefits of Integrating Nature and Natural Elements into our Environment, Seamus' How Tea Can Improve our Mental and Physical Health, and Emmett's presentation and performance demonstrating Three Eras of Piano Music. Alex (not shown) presented his topic "Do we learn anything from history? Comparing 1930s Germany to today's Russia" on April 20. Kudos to all four senior projects and presenters. You are one step closer to Grad Green! |

- The Beal's inspiring learning philosophy, carefully balanced with today's education challenges, opportunities, and advances
- Stewardship of our magnificent campus, waters, and lands

| | "I always tell kids that the goal isn't to get good at high school while you're here, because that's only gonna last a couple of years. The goal is to get good at learning for the rest of your life. It’s about slowing down, having a purpose, being kind to yourself, and kind to everybody around you. It’s about awareness and learning to be mindful. It's pretty cool to see kids develop these abilities while they're here and to know that for the rest of their lives, it will guide how they respond to life’s challenges."
