Passion-based Learning during Winter Term Winter was slow to arrive in northern Michigan, but mid-January’s blizzards have made up for lost time, and snow clouds now pillow our campus. The branches are heavy, and our skiers’ hearts are light with thoughts of lessons and exhilarating runs down the many faces of Crystal Mountain. Grace, the school’s trusty snow plow, keeps paths and roadways clear, but when we trek off-grid, we must work hard to keep the deep drifts from dropping into the tops of our boots. Our faculty dogs romp joyfully through the fluff and then calmly wait for students to pick the tiny iceballs from their coats when they come inside. Each January, we move toward each other for warmth, comfort, and light. Winter Term classes generate this same feeling of collective warmth and energy. The schedule eases with only two extended classes per day. Still, our deep dive into topics as diverse as storytelling to travel and cooking to pop culture weave together learning that is creative, satisfying, and often a spark for further exploration. Time to follow a trail of ideas or a tangent of topics is a luxury few traditional classrooms or schools afford. January’s playful but passion-filled Winter Term courses, designed by our creative faculty, act as a springboard for curious minds. Leelanau’s hands-on learning approach is ideal for stirring their interest and connection to the material. Educator, author, and science evangelist Ainissa Ramirez, Ph.D., explains this phenomenon well. “Love of learning is the key skill for the 21st century…There is a simple way to get a child passionate about something: 1. Find out what each child is innately passionate about.
2. Be an instructor that exudes passion for the topic, and infect your students with that excitement.” This is the only infection we invite to campus during flu and COVID season! Students take their cues from Leelanau teachers, who are learners themselves. New courses are created all the time to match the ever-evolving interests and passions of faculty and students. When curiosity is unleashed and students are given a safe space to take healthy risks, magic happens. So, our teens are busy writing songs, painting with watercolors, skiing, baking, heading to Spain, and making lanterns. They’re exploring and learning about what lights them up, and most importantly, they are learning about themselves. Winter Term is a magical and memorable time for our students and faculty alike. As we trek through the snow and the month, we look forward to the culmination of this new knowledge at our annual Winter Term celebration. Undoubtedly, an avalanche of new skills, discoveries, and passions will amass that afternoon, creating fresh tracks toward a lifetime of learning. |

“True teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross; then, having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create their own.” — Nikos Kazantzakis

Celebrating MLK Day together Leelanau's new "Special Days" committee, led by faculty member Angela Repke, worked for months to develop a meaningful history and exploratory program worthy of MLK Day. In the morning, students gathered in small groups with faculty to discuss laws, identity, photography, art, and film. They also completed a service project for 5loaves2fish, a local organization that promotes compassion by providing nourishing meals to those experiencing food insecurity and homelessness. In the afternoon, the entire school took a field trip to Traverse City's Dennos Museum for their "Embrace the Dream" programming. As a final tribute, several students and faculty attended a Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Performance entitled "An Act of Resilience" at Interlochen Center for the Arts, with music, slam poetry, dance, video, and speakers. Creativity Center-ed Space |

Over the past few months, students and faculty have watched the Charles E. Scripps Jr. Creativity Center rise out of the ground, whetting all our appetites for the projects and skills that will stem from its completion. Welding, laser etching, pottery, and, hopefully, woodworking will be creative skills taught in the space, in addition to STEM-focused learning. Several entrepreneurial ideas are circling the campus, too. We hope to dedicate this site this spring and put the space to use ASAP! |

The Leelanau School: It's hard to put your finger on it. |
|
|
"Imagine grabbing your fishing pole and heading to the river during lunch. Or perhaps taking a dog on a walk, catching up on rest, or reading a book just for fun. With an hour break for lunch each day, Leelanau helps teenagers build healthy habits for mental wellness. Seeking balance is the way of life at Leelanau!" |
Have you ever struggled to describe The Leelanau School to friends and family? We do — all the time. To paraphrase Mr. Blondia, "Leelanau is the ideal school for most students and absolutely essential to others." Describing Leelanau's educational essence has never been easy. The Beals and Hueys set out to create something new, different, and meaningful. They worked to break the traditional mold, changing the why and how students learned by integrating work, play, and relationships into the equation. Ninety-five years later, Leelanau is still unconventional, important, and occasionally indescribable. Let's be honest: joyful, hands-on learning inside and outside the classroom is not the language used to describe most high school programs. To help us convey this "Better Way to Learn" in our admission materials, we ask prospective families and our wider audience to reimagine what high school and learning should look like and can look like with the right chemistry of people, place, passion, and purpose. If you struggle for the right words, consider pointing friends to our Facebook and Instagram pages. These pictures paint a thousand of them! |

"Imagine taking a walk with friends before classes. Or perhaps lifting weights in the gym, playing a game of 3-on-3, or practicing yoga. Imagine a school that prioritizes eating a healthy breakfast, taking time to connect, and breathing in fresh air. At The Leelanau School, every morning begins with nourishment - for the body, mind, and soul - our answer to the compelling research proving the connection between movement and enhanced learning." |
"Imagine living in the middle of a National Park! The Leelanau School's 42-acre campus, within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, is not only an ideal classroom but also a beautiful home. Students can step outside their dorms and enjoy the shores of Lake Michigan, the banks of Crystal River, and a forest of pines and oaks at any time!" |

"At The Leelanau School, you don't just have to imagine achieving your goals - you have a whole support system of passionate educators who empower you to plan, implement, and succeed! And that same community is right there to celebrate with you when you hit the bull's eye, whatever that might look like for YOU." |
"Imagine a high school with a gentle pace. A community of educators that encourages healthy lifestyles. A group of peers who celebrate your growth. Time and support to nourish your mind and body. This is the way of life at The Leelanau School." |

Do You Want To Build A Snowman? |
From Winter's Beauty by William H Davies Now winter's here and rivers freeze; As I walk out I see the trees, Wherein the pretty squirrels sleep, All standing in the snow so deep: And every twig, however small, Is blossomed white and beautiful. Then welcome, winter, with thy power To make this tree a big white flower; To make this tree a lovely sight, With fifty brown arms draped in white, While thousands of small fingers show In soft white gloves of purest snow. |
