What We Learn from Winter Term

How often do you get the chance to dedicate deep work to a topic that interests you without interruption? How often are you presented with an opportunity to try something completely different than your day-to-day routine? If your answer is rarely or never, you'll understand why our faculty, students, and alumni are devoted to Leelanau's Winter Term.

Winter Term presents that opportunity for creativity, exploration, travel, meaningful interaction, and physical challenge. Leelanau faculty craft small classes that spark interests, push boundaries, and engage students in coursework that demands focused attention. All this knowledge culminates in a Winter Term celebration of learning with presentations, artistry, stories of adventure, and hopefully, samples of the tasty treats prepared by our Food is Love class!

Many Leelanau alumni admit their educational, occupational, and avocational journeys were influenced by topics explored during Winter Term. in this distracted world of Instagrams and short attention spans, in-depth work, and time for focused success are worthy resolutions and lessons for us all.

Our UPS Guy (and Secret Santa) Deserve a Medal!

January brought many good tidings to The Leelanau School. The wonderful momentum we experienced on #GivingTuesday carried through December and early January, allowing us to kickstart exciting new building and renovation projects, pay on lingering debt from days of old, and secure nearly all of the Faculty Wishlist requests we received this fall.

And daily deliveries of Amazon Wishlist items continue to arrive thanks to one or more anonymous donors. These items range from microscope slides and biology waders to ski patrol radios, a pool table cover, jewelry-making supplies, a rock tumbler, games, chess sets, and gym mats. If you are one of our Secret Santas, we'd love to know in order to thank you properly and enthusiastically!

Alumni Reunion 2022

Though the weather outside is frightful, thoughts are turning to our Alumni Reunion scheduled for July 8-10, 2022.

"We've much celebrating and recreating to do together," said Director of Alumni and Development, Kate Olson. "We've missed many milestones over the past two years, and alumni are eager to walk these Lake Michigan shores again."

Leelanau will make every effort to keep Reunion activities safe. Planning is underway, with a particular focus on outdoor activities, meals, excursions, tours, and music. Guests will be asked to follow Leelanau's Covid protocols, and participants are urged to vaccinate ahead of the weekend to protect classmates.

The Alumni Office will mail reunion details and registration materials in early Spring. If you (or a friend) are not on our mail or email list, please use this quick link to update your address:

Certifiably Great!

This month, Science Department Chair Bruce Hood and senior Ellie Herman were certified PSIA Level 1 (Professional Ski Instructors of America) by our very own Leelanau alumnus, Riley Shepard '14. Riley attended The Leelanau School for all four years and was a student of Mr. Hood in the classroom and on the slopes.

Riley provided the certification at Crystal Mountain, slopes all three know well. The Leelanau legacy of ski instruction is in great hands for new generations of talented skiers!

Food is Love serves Safe Harbor

Our Food is Love Winter Term class had the honor of serving Friday lunch last week to Traverse City's Safe Harbor guests. Dedicated to preserving the physical health and spiritual welfare of adults experiencing homelessness, Safe Harbor offers food, shelter, and hope.

"Our kids were awesome getting the meal prepared, and our guests were genuinely grateful for the homemade quesadillas and cookies we provided," said co-teacher Joe Blondia. "We all benefited from this time together."
