"A Better Way to Learn" is built on a better way to teach!

On August 30, 42 faculty and staff returned to The Leelanau School campus for an intensive week of physical and mental exercise, paving the way for a successful school year. Welcoming and preparing five new staff members reminded us how much there is to learn about this small but mighty school and how best to orient our new students with compassion and patience.

Exploratory Trip planning, Student Voice and Adultism, and Family Advisory Units were hot topics of discussion, in addition to COVID-19 updates and current school safety practices. Listening, engaging, and core values are always on the syllabi. Thankfully, Leelanau's "new normal" post-vaccine feels more natural for this seasoned and close-knit community.

We are eager to share school stories and alumni updates in the months ahead. If you have ideas for stories, please send them our way. May your transition to fall bring positive "new school year" opportunities for adventure and learning!

Sincerely,

Kate Olson

“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” ― John Muir

And our new world opened with wonder, work, and a hefty dose of wilderness. Happily, Exploratory Trips returned for our student body as they arrived on campus this fall. Leelanau seniors, juniors, and froshmores were welcomed to campus to unpack their rooms, and then within hours, repack their bags for an outdoor adventure with new friends and teachers. Canoeing, hiking, camping, cooking, and campfires brought students together and kickstarted important communication and learning opportunities for all.

Our nimble faculty rearranged plans to keep students engaged and (mostly) dry despite some early September rain and winds! Though outnumbered, our returning students served as welcoming guides and mentors to our 19 newcomers. Everyone returned to campus ready for adventure in the classroom, their houses, and this beautiful campus.

Enjoy a few photos from these early days of school!
