July's Alumni Weekend proved to be a delightful mix of glorious weather, leisurely conversations over great food, and quiet moments to explore campus and engage with the larger Leelanau family. With alumni guests from classes ranging from 1952-2010, and retired faculty members with over 100 years of combined service (Roo and Larry Smith, Rob and Barb Karner, and Norm Wheeler), alumni had the opportunity to swap stories of old and hear inspiring updates from Head of School Rob Hansen. Before Saturday's banquet, alumni gathered to express gratitude to those in the room - and elsewhere - for their impact on their Leelanau experience. Laughs, tears, and more splendid stories ensued! The weekend was a reassuring reminder that the stories and shared experiences binding the Leelanau School community together are sturdy, lasting, and awaiting the next generation. |

John Hogshead's '82 father, John Hogshead '55, planted many of the trees now lining the Homestead Resort after getting caught smoking by Charles Shinn? (Apparently, this work provided ample opportunity to smoke a little more.) J.P. Larkin '87 taught himself to pole vault after finding an old pole in campus storage. He even managed to win the Cherryland Conference championship after Leland's exasperated coach offered some much-needed technique and style tips. Leland's pole-vaulters were none too happy. Kelli Daly '05 was excited to sleep in Kindel House for the first time! Holly Lang '84 has seen Charlie the Ghost! Sally McNutt '52 celebrate her 70th graduation anniversary with us. Houseparent Mary (Mama) Myers used to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Koolaid for Chris (aka Kip) Zanardi '10 when he'd had a rough day. Bob McNutt '55 and J.P. Larkin '87 sported the most coveted Leelanau swag during their stay....a vintage letter sweater and some handsome hightops. |
