Long, long ago, a small but mighty school was created along the sandy shores and great blue waters of Lake Michigan. Nestled among tall pines and sturdy oaks and hugging the banks of a Crystal-clear river, students traveled from near and far to this magical spot in search of new and creative ways of learning from teachers of great cheer and understanding...

Opening up a young learner is much like turning to the first page of a new novel. You know there will be adventure. You expect there will be drama. Twists and turns will thicken the plot, and missteps complicate the situation. You begin to connect with the characters and grow with them throughout the chapters. You hope for an inspiring journey and applaud a satisfying ending. With a really good book, you can’t wait for the sequel.

The Leelanau School has been turning these pages for more than nine decades. Our main characters - faculty and students alike - are rich with intrigue, humor, complexity, and resilience. Somehow, seemingly unrelated narratives find ways to merge into shared experiences and authentic storylines. The plot develops by way of a full spectrum of motivations and colorful perspectives. And, of course, everything is enhanced by the enchanted forest where our story unfolds.

We invite you to celebrate your chapter of The Leelanau School story and follow emerging chapters with new but hauntingly familiar characters. No matter the decade or reason, we open this book with similar dreams; the promise of opportunity, exploration, ideas, skills, and community. Hopefully, we discover something meaningful about ourselves and each other along the journey.

And so our story continues...

Bright Holiday Greetings,

Celebrate Curiosity!

Twenty-three 7th and 8th grade students from the Traverse City Children's House/Compass Jr. High (see above) visited Leelanau on Friday, December 2nd, to see how learning happens on our campus! Students were treated to mini-classes in ancient rhythms and drumming, phalanx warfare, freshwater organisms, and Japanese Raku pottery to complement their recent studies of ancient civilizations. What a treat to show off our beautiful campus to others!

CELEBRATE GENEROSITY!

Look what you've created through kindness and philanthropy!

THANK YOU to all who have responded to Leelanau's requests for support over the past many months. Your faith and philanthropy are helping us deliver a creative, individualized, and meaningful education to our students.

This fall, beyond mission-critical educational opportunities and classroom resources, your generosity helped:

  • Fulfill more than half the requests from our Faculty Wishlist.
  • Exceed last year's GivingTuesday totals, raising over $184,000 during that giving window!
  • Generate $11,300 in Trustee bonus gifts for new and returning donors. (Still available until Jan.1, 2023!)
  • Provide new lighting in the Cook Learning Commons (installation in early spring.)
  • Initiate and support a new, second-semester exploratory program focusing on student leadership.
  • Fix the furnace, replace a generator, patch the Student Center Roof, and purchase two new/used vehicles for off-campus excursions.
  • Secure an updated groundbreaking date of April 2023 for the Charles Scripps Creativity Center.
  • Payoff another $240,000 of Leelanau's decades-old debt, leaving less than $1M to go!*

Of course, there are so many things we can accomplish together with new, loyal, and sustaining donations. Please consider making a gift that speaks to your heart and your budget at:

Make a Year-End Gift Today!

* If you are interested in securing the future of The Leelanau School in a big way, please help us pay off the last of our decades-old debt. Campus naming opportunities are available for gifts of $50,000 and above, along with the gratitude of our entire Leelanau community. You can help us turn the page on this complicated (and tired) chapter of Leelanau's history!

CELEBRATE THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Leelanau's new art faculty, Elara Coleman (pictured), offered two new art classes this fall, enameling and metals/jewelry, in addition to art exploration and drawing and painting. Pottery continues in Mr. Hood's creative hands. We celebrated a gallery of student work during November's Arts Collective.

CELEBRATE KNOWLEDGE

There are many ways to evaluate a student's performance over the semester, and sitting for a two-hour exam is less than ideal for everybody we know! Leelanau faculty work closely with their students to craft smart ways to convey knowledge gained. Perhaps it is a Spanish presentation or musical performance? Or a government test divided into smaller sections on amendments, court cases, vocabulary, and essay. Wouldn't it be cool to have a 1x1 discussion with your chem teacher about actions and reactions?

Discovering how the brain works is only the start. Identifying teachers that will walk that path with you is the winning formula! #celebratelearningstyles #learningforlife #noteachingtothetest #abetterwaytolearn

AUTHENTIC LEARNING

"We're wired to learn. That's just survival. And when you ask people about their most powerful learning experience, they hardly ever talk about a cinder block classroom. They’ll talk about a fishing adventure with their uncle or exploring a pond in the woods. The concept of schooling is a relatively new idea in human history - sending young people to experts outside the family - and it is supposed to facilitate learning. It’s fair to question how this experiment is working. The truth is that the results are mixed. Real authentic learning has to be intrinsically rewarding. The student has to experience it for themselves. They have to construct their own knowledge. Authentic learning can't be given - it has to be experienced."
