From Acorn to Oaks: A Lesson in Gratitude and Growth Angela Repke, Learning Specialist It’s that time of year when the crimson and gold leaves of northern Michigan have danced to the ground and lie damp on our paths. Pine needles carpet the grass, trails, and boardwalks. As we stroll the campus, our feet crunch acorns because there are so many we simply can’t escape them. Many of these acorns will be devoured by chipmunks, bluejays, or squirrels. But don’t worry, those acorns left on the ground during the darkest months of winter will be busy with potential and purpose. This fall, we rode mountain bikes, waded in the river, played with fire in metals class, created music, read books, and paddled upstream and down. We studied the stars, Spanish, read about dropping the atomic bomb in Trinity, memorized mathematical equations, examined the ecology of sustainability, and so much more. But what we gained this semester cannot simply be measured in activities and classwork. We learned plenty in and out of the classroom. Above all, we started to understand more about ourselves and those around us. Curiosity was unleashed, giving students a safe space to take healthy risks. As a community, we helped each other get back up and applauded one another in times of triumph and resilience. Perspectives opened up, and new talents and skills sprouted. Together, we wiggled, writhed, and prevailed to grow up, into and out of this place we call home. We are grateful to belong to this hardworking and deep-feeling community. Our human spirits have come alive and continue to thrive within the mission, magic, and marvel of our Leelanau family. We will grow from acorn to oak, just as we always have at The Leelanau School. “Straight as the Pine, Sturdy as the Oak.” The Leelanau School | Established 1929 |

THANKS FOR GIVING! Through the generosity of Leelanau friends and family, we raised more than $147,000 on November 28 for #GIVINGTUESDAY!!! This is nearly one third of our philanthropic goal for the annual fund this year. AMAZING! Over this week, we also received support for our Auditorium Project and the Faculty Wishlist, with donations ranging from juggling balls, paint and sewing machines, to chemistry scales, yoga equipment, and theatre lighting. The entire community is grateful for your thoughtfulness. Your gift of any size to the Leelanau Giving Fund via a one-time contribution or monthly sustaining donations is needed and celebrated. We welcome your help as we approach the end of the calendar and fiscal year. You can select your preferred area of support when you visit leelanau.org/giving. If you have questions regarding a gift idea, stock or IRA contribition, or a planned gift please contact Rob Hansen at rhansen@leelanau.org or Kate Olson at kolson@leelanau.org. |

An extreme “Shout Out” to our ISACS Visiting Team, lead educators from fellow independent schools, who embedded in our campus in late October as part of our continuous improvement and accreditation process. Their attention to faculty, students, administration, and board members was sincere, thoughtful, and tireless. They left no stone unturned. Their commendations and recommendations are affirming and informative. As they departed, they said, “Every school claims to be a family, but Leelanau really is!” Thank you, Kevin, Jane, David, and Dan, for supporting independent schooling. Their complete report is expected shortly. |

APPLE DAYS 2023 A Bountiful Tradition! Leelanau's annual Apple Day celebration reached new heights this year as the entire school assisted Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan to collect apples from a banner crop for those in need. Once the harvesting was done, students and faculty returned to campus for cider pressing, apple pie baking, and general merriment! |

The Leelanau School Board of Trustees met Friday, October 27th. The board welcomed Peggy Miller, mother of Annie (Class of 2015) to the board. Peggy lives with her husband, Geno, in Leland. She brings her passion for volunteering and helping her community to the board. The trustees look forward to welcoming Arya Khoshnegah (Class of ’81) to the board in January 2024.
As is the custom, the board meeting began with a reading of our Mission Statement to reinforce the board’s responsibility to always support and be tuned to the School’s Mission. Reports from the administrative team were reviewed and accepted. The current student body is already showing itself to be one that is a pleasure for the staff to work with. Rob Hansen reported on the launch of several subcommittees to begin supporting the 2023-2030 Strategic Plan’s foci of Professional Learning and Innovation, Student Experience, and Community Support. These subcommittees include a Professional Development group chaired by Dr. Wolterink and Mr. Zanardi, a Special Curricular Days group chaired by Ms. Repke, and a Community Outreach group chaired by Ms. Ellsworth and Mr. Beery. The board was pleased to note that students will be represented on the Special Curricular Days and the Community Outreach subcommittees.
The board reviewed and approved the 2023-2024 budget. Time was then spent reviewing materials that were prepared in anticipation of the ISACS visit that occured on 10/29-10/31. Seven board members made themselves available to meet with the ISACS review team to answer questions regarding the school’s governance.
And, as always, Friday lunch at the school was delicious!

A Loss in our Leelanau Family It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of Carolyn Helmlinger who served as Board Chair of the Leelanau School from 2016-2022. Carolyn was the right leader at the right time for Leelanau. Her wisdom, grace and forward thinking continues to inspire the school today. She was an advocate for students and staff, and a protector of our mission. Along with her family, we celebrate her life, her accomplishments, and her lasting impact on Leelanau. |

Ohana Thanksgiving and the Fall Arts Collaborative
Ohana means family, and that is what we celebrated this month during our Thanksgiving Feast and Fall Arts Collective. Our kitchen team served a magnificent meal with a Hawaiian theme, complete with grilled pineapple, jasmine rice, perfectly purpley Okanawan sweet potato puree, and all those apple pies students made on Apple Day. We were thankful for the good food, amazing arts performances and gallery, and the family and friends that joined us from near and far. |

If You Build It... All eyes are focused on the Charles E. Scripps Jr. Creativity Center, long awaited and now going up in a flurry, despite recent snow flurries in Leelanau County. This space will be a home to pottery, welding, and wood-working tools and courses, as well as the laser etcher awaiting its new home. We are so excited about the opportunities this space will provide. The Center is provided through the generosity of Charles Scripps, a Leelanau parent, grandparent, and friend. Other parents have joined in to help with construction materials and furnishings for the space. Our gratitude to all. We look forward to using this facility as soon as possible, and dedicating the space this Spring! |

Winter Waits Poet unknown
Ice and snow, ice and snow, Frozen fields where e'er we go. Frozen fields and frozen lakes, Frosted o'er like wedding cakes. Girls and boys leave your toys. Come and taste cold-weather joys. Bring your sleds and bring your skates. Hasten now while winter waits. |
